This year I went to a few festivals.
1.)The first one I actually about had bought the light off the guy, but had a concious because I thought I was ripping him off.
2.)The second festival the guy wouldn't even talk to me.

Here's what I know about this light.  (through talking with people who have encountered it)

I've ordered the bulbs for testing, but I need help identifying the spring like conduit used to make the lights look like they are defying gravity.

I'v seen him put the light away and it looks as if the wires come together and slide down into the handle of the flashlight. Kind of like an extendo chango type of deal.

I need your help! pretty obsessed about this. Please see the example video below.

Quote
"They're custom made, its a 9 led flashlight thats had the leds extended out onto these flexible rods.
He took the LEDs out of the flashlight and wired them into the extension"

My latest problem is getting this tight fitting metal ring out of the inside.
I may need to get a new flashlight, but I like this one. Seems pretty durable.

There's a metal collar that holds the circuit board in place. It's strong as hell and I can't pry it out.

Ok guys got it apart, but have a space limitation to actually do what I want to do
(push all LED's up to make them fan out)

Feel free to post your opinions and anything.

Here's an update. I want to try and fit as much in the original flashlight as possible.
Having said that... the size of each LED is about 3/16" OD.

The only thing I can find that has that OD and something I can run wire through is aquarium air hose.

I feel like it's going to be a bit too flimsy, so I am going to try and strengthen it with a coat hanger or some other kind of flexible wire.

You should do this with WS2811 LEDs and a controller.
The WS2811s are individually addressable which makes for some neat patterns instead of all the LEDs being the same colour.

Controller: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/25pcs-12mm-waterproof-WS2811-Pixel-Addresable-Color-LED-Module-String-Large-/151453541217?pt=US_String_Lights_Fairy_Lights&hash=item234355a361

Did you find out what kind of support structure works?
How about some spring steel from something like a steel fish tape?
Like this: http://www.homedepot.ca/product/depthfinder-high-strength-1-4-inch-wide-steel-fish-tape-25-ft/918746

As for running the wire and the support structure through, use heat shrink tubing. Slide everything in, then heat it up to shrink it.

Ps: sorry for linking Canadian sites, the same stuff can be found in the US Smiley

Thanks for all the advice.
You have some interesting ideas. I like em.

I contacted a conduit guy online. He sent me a bunch of free samples.
I have some nice 1/8" OD spring style conduit.

I still think it's a bit too flimsy at longer lengths (I only received 1' lengths)
If I get the pvc coated stuff... It might do the trick.

I am using 30ga. stranded hookup wire, and slow changing L.E.D's.
The led's change 3 colors and secondary colors on each side of the spectrum. They are nice.

Just wanted to say, I am getting a lot closer guys. I should have a beta project to show off soon.

The conduit guy sent me some great samples.
Who would have thought that conduit could get that small?!!

I may have to get some bigger samples, but closer and closer I get!

I built the prototype and all the original mechanics work
ie.) power on/off and battery compartment

Looks cool, but still doesn't incorporate the new material I have coming from China.

I am going to try an attach a gif I created today.

I made 3 of these lights.

Creating it with the clickey OEM button on the bottom doesn't allow for me to get all haggard with em' like I want.
When you rage out with it the lights cut out and start their sequence over again.

I am going to just wire in an inline switch and all should be fine.

I got a long PVC pole and made a few fittings to create a totum to take to festivals. I sprayed it with rhino liner and now it's super grippy and looks totally badass at night.
The brightness / color fade / flexibility of this light makes it a huge conversation piece at festivals and such.
